Washer in a laundry room

Over its lifespan, your top-load or front-load washer will inevitably run into a few problems. Unfortunately, some models are more prone to breakdowns than others, and you may need to replace certain parts. At Ateliers G. Paquette in Montreal, we specialize in repairing washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and more. Our team knows which washer parts frequently break down and how to fix them. Here’s what you need to know about them.

1. Drain pump If the drain pump on your washing machine breaks, the unit may not drain properly at the end of its wash cycle. You can use an ohmmeter to determine if this part needs to be replaced.

2. Control panel Modern appliances are equipped with sophisticated electronic systems and control panels. Consequently, a loose wire or damaged circuit could disable certain wash functions or the entire washer.

3. Motor If the washer motor is completely silent when starting a cycle, it's probably broken. Additionally, everyday wear and tear can cause the motor to become imbalanced or slow. It’s important to fix the motor as soon as possible to prevent the issue from becoming worse.

4. Bearings Over time, your washing machine’s bearings can become rusted and jammed. You can access and replace the bearings by removing the back panel of the washer.

5. Gasket

If the gasket around your washing machine’s door is punctured or torn, it could leak during the wash cycle.

Over time, you may have to replace other parts on your washer like the drain hose, detergent dispenser, suspension system, solenoid valve filters and drum belt. Furthermore, even if your washing machine is in good condition, there are many parts that should be replaced after 10 years.
